Without doing a thing Thursday, Manny Ramirez might have found at least a little incentive to activate his 2010 contract option and remain the Dodgers.
The tentative 2010 major league schedule was released, and the Dodgers are slated to play a three-game series June 18-20 at Fenway Park in Boston.
Ramirez had a contentious departure from the Red Sox at the 2008 trade deadline, when some of his teammates accused him of quitting on the team. He seemed energized upon his arrival in Los Angeles, though, and led the Dodgers to the National League Championship Series.
Ramirez's new contract, signed this past offseason, calls for him to make $25 million this season and $20 million next year. But he can opt out of next year's portion of the deal and become a free agent again.
Ramirez must decide whether to opt out by the fifth day after this year's World Series or by Nov. 10, whichever is later.
Of course, if the Dodgers and Red Sox meet in this fall's World Series, a regular-season meeting between the teams in 2010 would hardly seem like one of the reasons Ramirez might choose to stay.
The slugger is a .315 career hitter at Fenway Park in 2,085 at-bats, with 141 home runs and 471 RBIs.
